What's Eating You

I Corinthians 6:13

“All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.”

Proverbs 23:1-3

“When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.”

James 1: 13-14

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

Introduction

Many believers today are suffering setback, bondage and defeat. There are not too many “Christians, saints, or people of faith that will agree; but if we are honest with ourselves we are not in the place where we know we can be as it concerns our walk with Christ. We may not be in a backslidden state; some may be faithful members of the church, or even faithful servants. Other may be leaders in the Church who may appear to everyone else that they are walking in victory-they have even themselves fooled. However if we were truly honest we are hurting, frustrated and unfulfilled. Why? What causes us to continue is this condition? Surely we don’t want to continue this way. Surely we want more. The problem is that we are consumed by our appetites. (What’s eating you?)

If we are not careful, we can fall prey to what we eat. “As it is in the physical so is it in the spiritual”. What we eat may very well begin to eat us (What’s eating you). The word ‘eat’ connotes the idea of destroying something, to ravage (i.e. to bring heavy destruction on; devastate). What we eat, what ingest; can result in severe physical and psychological problems. We can become weak, unhealthy and sick. So, it is critically that we cultivate an appetite that optimizes growth and prevents health problems. We must control our appetite; we must bring them into subjection.

So, what does our appetite have to with us suffering setback or being in bondage or suffering defeat. What role does our appetite play in our frustration and un-fulfillment? Well, let us take a closer look at this word. While many, normally associate appetite with the consumption of food that is ingested via the mouth; I have found that appetite connotes desires on a broader scale. Appetite is defined as an instinctive physical desire, for food or drink; a desire to satisfy a bodily craving, as for sexual pleasure; a desire to satisfy any bodily need or craving; a desire or inclination for something; taste.

We are physical and spiritual being and as it is in the physical, it is in the spiritual. As the physical part of us hungers and longing to be satisfied and gratified; likewise our spirit man hungers. The Bible uses the term lust to describe our appetites. Galatians 5:17.

Appetite is the desire to eat food, felt as hunger = Depletion of the body's store of nutrients is a more likely cause of hunger.

Our appetites are psychological dependent on our memory and associations, hunger are physiological aroused by the need for nourishment. We are psycologically connected to the pleasures we experience, so make sure what please you pleases God.
