The Paradox of Salvation

The paradox of Salvation: the FREE gift that cost everything

Luke 14:25-33

"And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace. So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple."

Paradox

  • something (such as a situation) that is made up of two opposite things and that seems impossible but is actually true or possible

  • a statement that seems to say two opposite things but that may be true

“Biblical Paradoxes are not puzzles; they are just puzzling to those who don’t understand them”

  • Matthew 13:10 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

“It is a truth that Challenges common thought"

  • Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

“We cannot conform a paradox to our thinking; we must conform to the paradox”

  • Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Because paradoxical statement challenges common thought we are requires to renew our minds-to repent.

  • Ephesians 4:23 King James Version. And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

  • Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commands all men everywhere to repent:

  • Repent= change your thinking

“It is (a paradox) not for figuring out; it’s for receiving as the truth that it is; even when it doesn’t conform to common thinking”

  • John 3:7-8 Jesus told Nicodemus not to marvel about the paradox, the He elaborates a little but never takes the paradox apart, but restate it as if to say receive this truth as your reality.

  • When we receive the paradox and walk in its reality, we become that paradox.

It is a free gift

  • Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Work out your salvation

  • Philippians 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

We must capitulate to receive the free gift.

  • That means we must surrender to God and to His terms, and we must not breach the contract.
