Binding the Spirit of Depression
The Canon of Prayer; Day 18
Depression:
feelings of severe despondency and dejection. (Oxford Dictionary)
(Despondency; the state of being despondent; depression of spirits from loss of courage or hope; dejection.)
a mental condition characterized by feelings of severe despondency and dejection, typically also with feelings of inadequacy and guilt, often accompanied by lack of energy and disturbance of appetite and sleep: -Depression(Oxford Dictionary)
Many people are oppressed by the Spirit of Depression; it is the feeling of hopelessness and despair. It is the feeling that life is not worth living, that happiness is a fleeting dream. The Spirit of Depression will attack you with accusations of condemnation to depress you and cause you guilt. He will tell you lies like, God has abandon you and that you are all alone; that no one cares about you and that your life is hopeless. “Major depressive disorder affects approximately 14.8 million American adults, or about 6.7 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older, in a given year”; according to one source.

This definition may seem out of place as it relates to people, and the Spirit of Depression; others will only see the financial aspect of this definition, so let’s deal with that first. If we are experiencing a financial crisis in our economy where jobs are few, unemployment is high, people are being laid off and businesses are closing down; it would not be hard for the Spirit of Depression to find victims. Hopelessness and despair can quickly grasp hold of the hearts and minds of people in times like these. So we can see that the Spirit of Depression will employed the spirit of Fear to promotion his agenda.
The other way this definition applies to people is that a person could be depleted in the economical market of their spirit, all of our emotional and spiritual resources have become deplete because they have not be renewed and or restored by the source- God who is the source of authentic Joy that overcomes sadness and despair, the source of authentic peace that overcomes fear, turmoil and chaos; many are just plain spiritually and emotionally bankrupt.
“THE ACTION OF LOWERING SOMETHING OR PRESSING SOMETHING DOWN” –Depression (Oxford Dictionary)
The Spirit of Depression is in the business of lowering a person, beating a person down mentally, psychologically and spiritually, wearing a person down and pressing upon a person so that they feel like throwing in the towel. The Spirit of Depression will have you magnify your failure and live in your failure and in defeat. I know, because I have been there. It feels like the world is caving in on you. But scripture say;
“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;”(2 Corinthians 4:7-9)
And we can be certain that, “all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28) Jesus said “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) and because we are joint heirs with Christ who has already overcome, we overcome. We can be sure; “weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” (Psalms 30:5) and “that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us”. (Romans 8:18) God will “give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness”. (Isaiah 61:3)
Prayer
Father I bind and rebuke the Spirit of Depression that oppress the people in my city, state and region; send your peace like a river. I declare that the peace of God is overflowing in the lives of those who are yielded to you. I prayer for those not yet saved, that they may come to the reality of the peace which passes all understand. Because you oh’ God are the Supreme and ultimate reality, and the only way we can ever experience real peace and real joy is to come into the reality that is you.
I prayer for those that are saved and are still struggling with the Spirit of Depression because of guilt, condemnation and the pressures of life; that you will cause them to realize the peace and joy that you give, that is not like what we find in the world but far greater. I declare renewed minds to those who have been bombarded with thoughts of failure, defeat, guilt, fear and condemnation.
I declare restoration to the neural pathway that would otherwise cause people to live and operate in the Spirit of Depression; I declare neural pathways of Peace and Joy in the name of Jesus. I declare a victorious mindset to those who battles thoughts and feelings of defeat. I declare a mindset of discipline to walk not after the flesh but after the spirit; for your word declare there is no condemnation to them the walk after spirit and not after the flesh.
I declare God is giving you beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness [Depression]”. (Isaiah 61:3)
